The Indian Scout motorcycle was the celebrity of the Indian motorcycle line from 1920 until 1939. Indian Scout motorcycles were used by police, by motorcycle racers, and during World War II. During the war, Indian made aircraft engines, motors for boats, air conditioners, and bicycles. Perhaps the most revered Indian Scout motorcycle was the 1928 101 Scout, with its lower slung outline and improved handling.

Indian Scout motorcycle went through some changes since its arrival in 1920. While it was introduced with an engine size of 37 cubic inch (596 cc) by 1927 it was increased to 45 cubic inches (745 cc). This came as a response to the American built motorcycle Excelsior Super X, which had a 45 cubic inch engine.

A second response was the 1928 introduction of the 101 Scout, which some fans consider to be the height of Indian Motorcycle technology. There remain, however, enthusiasts who are pleased with Indian’s use of the frame from its other superstar model, the Chief, in the Scout line starting in 1931.

Possibly as a conciliatory move for its supporters Scout came out with smaller models between 1932 till 1941with 30.50 cubic inch. These had engines which were smaller and were called Scout Pony, the Junior Scout, and the Thirty-Fifty.

The two heavyweight motorcycle companies Indian Motorcycle Company and Harley Davidson were trying to out do each other in America in the early years of 20th century. The competition was well known and was written about in a book called Harley-Davidson and Indian Wars by Allan Girdler. The run away success of Scout was strongly opposed by Harley Davidson.

One testimony to the speed and ruggedness of the 1920 Indian Scout motorcycle was racer Burt Munro’s use of a modified 1920 Scout to set land speed records between 1962 and 1967. Munro’s under-1000 cc world speed record in 1967 still stands. At the time, Munro, a New Zealander, was 68 years old and was riding a motorcycle that was 47 years old. This and other achievements were dramatized in 2005 in the movie The World’s Fastest Indian.

The company Indian Motorcycles faced a series of problems and was ultimately declared bankrupt in 1977. In 1935 controlling interest of Indian Motorcycles was sold and by 1946 it stopped manufacturing any motorcycle. After that till 1977 it changed hands several times. Through out 1980s and1990s the company was fighting court battles over the ownership of the brand name.

The claim of ownership came through in 1988 when IMCOA Licensing America won the trademark by the Federal court in Denver. A nine company multinational was set up to form Indian Motorcycle Company of America. From 1999 the manufacturing of Scout Motorcycles were started and went on till 2003 when the company again had to declare bankruptcy.

In 2006 Indian Motorcycle was set up again in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. They started manufacturing the Chief model but Scout model was not being produced anymore.

Indian Ace that afterwards became Indian Four bike had 77 cubic inch (1,256 cc) four cylinder machine by’44. The bike got tank-shifting three speed transmission and Indian fender was olaced around it. However after some production in’42 they stopped making this bike when World War II began.

America and Indian Motorcycle both were walking ahead in the year’27. The major client of the Scout and Chief brand from Indian Motorcycle was the police department. So much so that the company had to have a new department dealing with the supply to the police force. They also saw to it that the bike had a new lower frame.

Indian Motorcycle had no clue that from’28 the 101 Scout from their line would become enormously popular. They could not even imagine that after 40 years the bike would make the Under-1000 cc speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in northwest Utah.

A’27 Indian Motorcycle is a rare find today. The few specimens that have been lovingly restored to the attractive machines they started out as can sell for as much as $30,000. Clearly,’27 was a great year for the Indian Motorcycle Company.
